As you progress through the adventure stages, new action areas are unlocked. Completing each action sequence in turn allows you to explore more of the adventure areas.
Each action stage sees Sonic or one of the other characters racing around vast landscapes, often at a frantic pace. Most action stages are fairly linear, but some of the later stages offer several branching paths to completion.
All the familiar Sonic moves are present—spinning to kill enemies, bouncing off springs, and collecting rings have transitioned to the 3D world beautifully. Each character has its own style in the action stages.
Sonic and Tails are geared toward racing through at top speed, while getting Amy or Knuckles through a level may take more thought and planning. I found the levels with Big to be the most annoying in the game.
Generally he must use his fishing pole to hook and reel in his missing friend Froggy. After several attempts to get through even the first level with Big in any reasonable amount of time, I gave up and switched to a different character.
The biggest problem I had with the adventure sections of the game was the choppiness of the storyline. I started playing as Sonic and ran through all his levels first. After playing the other characters it started to make more sense, as each reveals different sections of the overall story.
The game also suffers from several bugs. In many areas the characters will fall right through what should be solid floors. The game also will not allow you to skip the cut scenes. I restarted my game a couple of times and found that even though I had already seen a scene and wanted to skip ahead to the action, the game forced me to sit through the entire sequence. The problems are not overwhelming—I enjoy this game a whole lot more than it annoys me and plan to keep playing for a long time.
There are lots of secrets and twists in the levels to keep you playing over and over again, as well as extra touches that boot the fun factor. One cute addition to the game is the A-Life system. You can find eggs throughout the game that will hatch into Chaos characters that can be raised in special garden areas. Once trained, they can be loaded back into Sonic Adventure and entered into races that can win you special bonuses and awards.
Dreamcast has changed that. The 3D modeling and lighting and smoke effects rival anything my Voodoo card can do, and the textures throughout the game are sharp and beautifully rendered. The player character is guided and instructed by the voice of Tikal the Echidna. Through exploration, the player discovers entrances to levels called Action Stages, some of which must be opened using keys hidden in the Adventure Field. Sonic must reach the level's end like in prior Sonic the Hedgehog games,; Tails must reach the end before Sonic; Knuckles must find three hidden shards of the Master Emerald; Amy must solve puzzles and avoid being caught by a robot; Big must fish for his pet frog; and Gamma must fight his way through stages using projectiles as a defense.
Some levels include minigames separate from the main story. These feature different styles of gameplay, among them rail shooting, racing, and sandboarding. Some minigames can only be accessed with particular characters. Fulfilling certain objectives allows the player to obtain bonus items. Unlocked minigames and stages the player has completed can be accessed from a Trial Mode on the title screen. Like previous Sonic the Hedgehog games, players collect golden rings as a form of health: if the player character is in possession of rings when they are hit by an enemy or other hazard, they will survive, but their rings will scatter and blink before disappearing.
Canisters containing power-ups such as speed shoes, additional rings, invincibility, and elemental shields are also hidden in levels.
In several stages, the player engages Robotnik or Chaos in a boss fight and must deplete the boss's health meter to proceed. Each character starts with a limited number of lives, and the player loses a life if the character drowns, gets crushed, or is hit without any rings in their possession. The game ends when the player runs out of lives. If your Chao isn't buff enough, he takes a nap before the finish. Ruby Course. This course tests only swimming.
The entire race takes place in a pool, appropriately enough. Amethyst Course. This course heavily emphasizes running. However, a wily Chao with good flying ability might opt for a crucial shortcut. Sapphire Course. This long course tests every aspect of your Chao's abilities.
